Sitting quietly on the edge of a convoluted bay and littered with ancient Lycan tombs, Üçağız would be an unforgettable village – except for the more unforgettable Kale/Kekova, a 15-minute boat ride away. So Üçağız remains where people park and take the boat to Kale. Reasons to stay here: a better-stocked grocery shop, a few delightful seafront restaurants – and Telemen’s memorable house.
Telemen is a fisherman. His partner is Mr İriş, a big jolly ex-banker who quit the rat race some years ago, and devoted himself to local history among other things. He and Telemen own two boats in which they ferry guests along the coast, with lively commentary (and the possibility of diving) guaranteed.
The house looks like a simple Swiss chalet on the outside. The rooms are very basic, almost youth hostelish; but one is left in nor doubt that life revolves around the large kitchen where Telemen whips up fresh fish suppers. In summer these are eaten alfresco in a garden sweetly scented by orange trees, and wild sage and oregano. |
