The deeply Middle-Eastern city of Urfa hides many such residences in its chaotic labyrinth, mute and grey outside, giving no clue of the lovely courtyards inside. This is one of the finest. Revived a few years ago, it mouldered for a while as the Governors Guesthouse, but was finally sold off in 2005. It is now taken over by a young woman of great pluck who stands out in a city where women have never been too visible.
Ms Yazmacı’s prime asset is her cuisine. In addition to old staples like the delicious Urfa kebab and the spicy bostana salad, her menu includes many traditional Urfa dishes that have long disappeared from the kebab-and-lahmacun dominated restaurant culture of the city. You can eat Western-style in the courtyard with chairs and tables; or else you can take a private room decked out in gorgeous carpets, and eat reclining on cushions like the ancient Greeks and Arabs. The rooms are of unequal size, and sparsely furnished. For the real treat, you have to go on the roof terrace. Here you face the Citadel of Urfa and the Sacred Pool of Abraham, and the bottomless antiquity of the city becomes palpable.
